While there has been much talk around the threat a nuclear Iran would pose, the situation today is that Iran is surrounded by US military bases. From that perspective, it is certainly plausible to argue that the Iranian regime simply feels threatened by all the United States' military bases around them, and therefore that Iran's regime sees nuclear weapons as the guarantee of its survival. The maps above and below certainly present a clear picture of US military forces in the area around Iran.
